Canadian Underwriter: How data breaches cause harm even if no financial info is stolen

July 17, 2018 — A recent data breach at Algonquin College in Ontario shows the need for education on cybersecurity.

Don Duncan, Director at NuData, comments on a report issued yesterday by Canadian Underwriter, disclosing that even though financial information was not stolen in the recent breach, it is important to understand the brevity of breached personally identifiable information. Up to approximately 110,000 people may be impacted by the breach, with about 5,000 at higher risk, due to the different types of information that were exposed.

Organizations should implement multi-layered intelligence to authenticate users, so that stolen personally identifiable information is not enough to access an account.
